How did it all start ..............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Culcheth Athletic Junior Football Club’s history goes back to the 1993/94 Season. Prior to 1993 there had been a Football team in the Village called Culcheth Terriers but unfortunately this disbanded and left a vacuum for children wanting to play Football.

It was during the 1993/94 season that a group of people led by Peter Green and Stuart Nightingale formed Culcheth Athletic Football Club with a team of U8/U9’s. The next season Andrew Keates and Nigel Chambers came along and formed an U7/U8 team.
In 1995/96 Barry Heath formed a new team, which later split into two teams due to the high level of interest from children in the area, and consequently at that time there were already 4 teams playing in the Village at different age groups.

As the years moved on from 1995/96, a new team was formed each year at the younger age group, so in 1996/97 there were five teams and so on.
Up until 1997/98 most games played were friendly matches but in that year, two Under 8 Teams were entered into the newly formed Warrington 7 a-side League. In 1999/2000 this League became part of the Solvay Intertox League which had existed since 1970 but had never run Under 11, 7 a-side football.
From 1996/97 onwards we had teams playing in the Leigh & District Youth League and also the Warrington Junior League. The Club has always encouraged and promoted girls Football and there has only been two seasons since 1997/98 when the Club didn’t have at least one girls team playing.
Most of the Club teams now play in the Warrington Junior Football League with the exception of the Girls teams who play in the South Manchester Girls Football League, and the mens Under 17 team which play in the Warrington & District League.

In 1999 Barry Heath took over as Secretary for the Club from Peter Green with Stuart Nightingale as Chairman. Stuart stepped down from the Chairman’s role in 2004 and left the Club.

From the very beginning the teams always played on the Shaw Street Recreation Ground but as the number of teams grew it became necessary to find additional pitches. To solve this problem agreements were made with the local Council and Culcheth High School, Culcheth Primary School and Newchurch Primary School for the Club to use their football pitch facilities. Initially this was for small sided pitches but later included the full size 11 a-side pitches. In the 2003/04 Season an agreement was also made with the then, Daten Club (Culcheth Sports Club) for the use of one of their pitches. Our U12 and U13 teams currently use this Culcheth Sports Club pitch.

With the planned redevelopment of Culcheth High School starting in 2008, when a number of Football pitches will become unavailable, the Club are currently putting in place plans to ensure all teams can continue playing football uninterrupted into the future.

Peter Green , Stuart Nightingale and Barry Heath all gave long and personal commitments to the Club over the years and were instrumental in developing the Club to where it is today. Barry stood down from active involvement in the Club at the end of the 2005/06 season handing over the reins as to Mark Hunt as Chairman with Eddy Estlin as General Secretary.
In 2007 Mark Hunt stepped down as Chairman and Bolo Lotay, the Club’s Treasurer since 2004, took over as Chairman. Also in 2007, Eddy Estlin decided to resign from his position and Nigel Sayers took over as General Secretary. The Club is currently in the process of recruiting a Treasurer to replace Bolo Lotay. The other current Committee Members are the League Secretary, Kirsty Henderson-Sayers and Geoff Hardern, the Website Manager.
A number of the Committee Members are either managing or coaching teams at different age groups for the Club.

The Club currently has 23 teams from an Academy squad for Under 6’s through to Under 16’s. We have two Girls teams, one at Under 12 playing in the South Manchester Girls Football League, Division A and an Under 15 team also playing in the South Manchester Girls Football League. We have almost 300 registered players !!!

The Club does not receive any special grants or funding and relies on player subscriptions and fund raising activities to help cover the cost of kit, equipment and pitch facilities.

We do have excellent support from many Sponsors and we very much appreciate their help and commitment.

We are currently working towards achieving Charter Status for the Club and this hopefully, will lead to us being able to secure additional grants and funds.
